Character Sketch Assignment Jan 18, 2017

Introduction:

What is a Character Sketch?

A character sketch is a rendering of a character and is usually done by asking yourself questions about the character. It is an attempt to assess the character’s personality and viewpoints which are generally shaped by the character’s life experiences.

Physical Characteristics

The first thing we notice about people is their physical characteristics, so drawing or painting a character is a good tool for assisting with a character sketch. Sometimes a person’s physical state is a representation of their internal state, but that is not always the case. Nevertheless, a vivid description of a character’s physicality, written and/or verbally is an essential part of a character sketch. So, answering questions about your character’s physicality is the first step on creating your character.

Struggles/Conflict

Most people go through struggles and conflicts in life and these life experiences tend to shape a character’s personality. So telling about your character’s life experiences is a good way to get your audience to understand your character. Representing this in a sketch could be quite challenging however.

Facial and Bodily Expressions

One way to represent a character’s is by depicting their emotional state. Facial and bodily expressions in your sketch can do this quite effectively. You first need to decide whether your character should be happy, angry, sad, perplexed, depressed or other based on their what you want to portray.

Assignment:

You are required to do a character sketch of someone you admire, and this could be a real life or fictional character person of your choice. Your character sketch is to include an artistic sketch of the person depicting their mood, emotions and general view on life.

You are also required to describe your character in writing. You are to look for qualities of your character and/or personal traits that you see in the person you want to write about. Your writing should inform your audience as to whether your character is a protagonist or antagonist. The main goal is to tell something about the person you are researching in words and a drawing. Be sure to use strong visual/descriptive words in your writing.
